A few reflections on 1 Timothy:
1) When we read the standards for Overseers and Deacons (1 Tim 3), we often apply those verses to only men who are currently in or being considered for those positions. I think these are standards every man should strive for. For two reasons. First, he is called to be the spiritual leader of his household and these standards honor God. Why wouldn’t each man aim for the highest standard? Second, he may be called upon one day to step into one of these roles. The church needs more qualified men.
2) Paul’s instructions to Timothy concerning women (1 Tim 2:8-15) was rooted in God’s design for the family (Genesis 1:27-28, 2:18-22). Today many want to discard this passage and God’s design for male headship, saying Paul’s instructions were for this culture in 1st Century Ephesus, not ours. That isn’t what we see here. We see Paul applying God’s design to the culture in Ephesus. Some point to prominent women in the church such as Lydia in Philippi to counter this passage. That only works if Paul’s instructions in Timothy disregard a woman’s value and role in the body of Christ, which they do not. Lydia was indeed an important member of the church in Philippi. Paul’s instructions regarding male headship in the church and family do not devalue women such as Lydia or Priscilla (who served with Paul in Ephesus for a season), they honor God’s design and God’s creation. The principle of male headship in the church and home is timeless.
3) So much attention is given to these two topics from 1 Timothy, but there is so much more. We must not loose sight of Paul’s stated purpose for writing; so that “you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.” Paul gave instructions to Timothy to pass to the church concerning how we are to conduct ourselves as members of the household of God (demonstrating godliness): guard the sound doctrines of the faith; pray for all people (especially kings and rulers that through their rule; Christians might lead peacefully and quiet lives, dignified in every way); men disciplining one another and women likewise; refraining from irreverent myths, gossip and slander; caring for widows without family; care for and honor the Elders (Overseers) of the church; practice church discipline for the sake of the church and repentance of the sinner, guard yourself from the love of money; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentelenss; and be rich in good works and generosity. I am sure I missed a few, but you get the picture. Timothy is a guide for the church so that we conduct ourselves in a way that honors God. These are not words just for Timothy or the church in Ephesus, they are timeless truths for all of God’s people.
We have now transitioned into 2 Timothy. Remember Paul’s situation has greatly changed. He is now writing from prison in Rome and facing execution for his faith.
